Industry News: Outgoing U.S. cancer chief reflects on his record, what’s next

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) chief and Nobel Prize–winning cancer biologist Harold Varmus announced that he is stepping down at the end of this month. His resignation letter pointed to his accomplishments...from creating an NCI center for global health to launching a project to find drugs targeting RAS, an important cell signaling pathway in cancer.  One of his final efforts results in the recent announcement of President Barack Obama’s Precision Medicine Initiative, which includes a $70 million cancer genomics and clinical trials effort at NCI.
