They call it the cancer tsunami – a super wave of disease that is estimated to have a $100 billion-plus impact. And it’s only going to grow as baby boomers age. The answer from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service (CMS) is the Oncology Care Model. CMS recently announced the final list of nearly 200 physician practices and nearly 20 payors that are participating in this innovative new approach. Here is a new option in 2015....

The Complex Care Management CPT code updates for 2015 fit directly in the cross-hairs of navigation work. Karna Morrow of Coding Strategies based outside of Atlanta, Ga, says the code update in 2015 came from "an effort to reimburse the primary care physician who is managing the chronic and complex patient in their practice in off-hours when they are not seeing patients."  She says there is definitely applicability to oncology care coordination and navigation for the patient with cancer plus a co-morbid condition like diabetes, hypertension or COPD, etc.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently reached out to physicians, requesting their feedback regarding a possible shift to reimbursement based on outcomes data. In a recent article, “Physician Pay Will Soon Depend on Outcomes,” for HealthLeaders Media, Cheryl Clark explains what this change could mean. CMS may begin reimbursing physicians according to very specific measures of their patients’ responses to treatment, rather than its current practice of basing reimbursement on whether or not the CMS approved processes of care are followed.
