The business of oncology measures (or metrics) can be a complicated one, however your organizations refer to them. Building internal cancer quality dashboards is often a confusing process. How do you know which factors you should be measuring, monitoring and sharing? Which information systems can provide real-time data? A group of researchers from Baptist Centers for Cancer Care, in Southaven, MS, and Memphis, TN,  and the University of Memphis in Tennessee, led by Raymond Osarogiagbon, MBBS and Nicolas Faris, MDiv, retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of all recipients of lung resection surgery at two hospitals over 42 months.  What they found:  Patients who underwent surgery for lung cancer often waited too long to receive treatment.  During this "gap in care" many did not receive critical diagnostic tests that are necessary to determine the best possible treatment.

If you work in healthcare, you hear a lot about big data and analytics. Cancer management systems go well beyond the electronic medical record (EMR), and are designed to support clinical quality while reducing costs. Many entities, including insurance companies, hospitals, oncology networks, and some oncology practices, are developing and/or using these models, which come in a variety of formats, including computer software and Web-based programs like Cordata Oncology.  The systems sometimes focus on one area, such as prescribed chemo regimes compared to guidelines, or provide guidance on all aspects of treatment via clinical pathways.

Reports
There are three categories of reports that cancer centers should review on a monthly basis: accreditation, operational and financial. Cancer centers with navigation programs often find it easiest to produce accreditation reports; however, operational and financial reports are just as critical to running a successful cancer program. Cancer centers that effectively create each of these reports will find it easier to: justify new hires, understand the inefficiencies within their programs and achieve necessary accreditations. All of this leads to quality patient care.
